[Sic] is what you use to show that something has been left unchanged from the original quote regardless of how wrong it may look.

Regardless, I concur that there is something kind of wrong here. Chinese sea monsters were said to hate the smell of burning hair so ancient sailors used to burn a pile on deck when in unknown waters (apparently).
