Not to scare the hell out of you but its "possible" someone is using your ip as their proxy. If you are on dial up you dont have a problem because it changes every time you sign on but...if you have a cable or dsl connection your ip address stays the same and you absolutely need to have a firewall. Could be something else I guess but definately get a firewall if you have a direct connection.
