While lovely extra long hair is more culturally common in India than the West, sadly, it does seem that there are reasons aside from forced/monetary ones for them to shave their hair. there is a religious ceremony where they sacrifice their long hair to a Hindu god for luck or prosperity.

But these sad things aside, India is truly the long hair capital of the world. Hard to find such lovely long thick hair anywhere else.
