Police have recovered 92 stolen ponytails from the apartment of a Springfield, Ill., man they said pretended he was delivering them to Locks of Love, which makes wigs for children undergoing cancer treatment.
The suspect, Melvin G. Hanks, 54, has been charged with theft. He is being held at the St. Clair County Jail in Belleville on $10,000 bail. The charge is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail. Authorities may increase the charge depending on the value of the hair.
There is no evidence Hanks tried to sell the ponytails. Authorities said they believed he must have a hair fetish.
