If you check the details, most hosts (like Brinkster.com) are targeting a specific profile. In Brinkster's case, they mention "small and medium sized businesses that are seeking a professional web presence". They aren't expecting to provide the kind of bandwidth that is generated by member sites that have a lot of picture and video content. The content may also be an issue. Many hosting companies won't accept a site that might be "adult" in nature. The hosting bill for most amateur adult websites is probably over $200 a month.
